Randel Leung, DMA
Dr. Randel Leung is an active educator and performer in the Colorado area. Leung started piano lessons at the age of five and joined the children’s choir when he was nine years old. Later, he was interested in learning the clarinet during 7th grade and has been playing since then. Leung earned a Doctor of Musical Arts in Clarinet Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Colorado Boulder under the tutelage of Daniel Silver. He also received degrees from the University of Texas at Austin (Master of Music and Artist Diploma) and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (Bachelor of Music). Before pursuing his degree in music, he completed a degree in Marine Studies. Leung’s recent honors include first prize and the Audience Favorite award in the Bruce Ekstrand Solo Competition and first prize in the International Clarinet Association Orchestral Audition Competition.
Leung performs regularly with the Colorado Symphony, Boulder Philharmonic, and Cheyenne Symphony. He has also performed with the Central City Opera, New Mexico Philharmonic Orchestra, Fort Collins Symphony, Longmont Symphony, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Macao Orchestra, City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong, as well as the New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players. Additionally, he has toured and performed throughout Asia and the United States. In the past summers, Leung was awarded fellowships to study and perform with world-class musicians in prestigious music festivals, including the Aspen Music Festival, Chautauqua Institution of Arts N.Y., Brevard Music Center, Taipei Music Academy and Festival, and Festival Napa Valley.
Leung manages a private studio teaching clarinet, saxophone, flute, and piano. He is one of the clarinet instructors at the University of Colorado Boulder. He was part of the Teaching Artist residency at the Aspen Music Festival and School from 2018 to 2020. He was also the woodwind mentor and one of the chamber music coaches at the Greater Boulder Youth Orchestra. He has been teaching for more than ten years and has taught a wide range of students from 5 to 60 years old.
Aside from his musical journey, Leung loves traveling – camping in the mountains during the summer and skiing during the winter season. In addition, he has visited more than 30 National Parks around the country. As a dog lover, people often called him a “dog whisperer”.
